What does your child wish you knew about practice?
*Kids need space, time, energy, and attention.
SPACE
Do they have a dedicated corner or a room without distractions?
Are they comfortable?
TIME
5 minutes 2 x day is better than 20 minutes 2 x week.
Do they have a set time of day for practice?
Set an alarm
Try a timer
ENERGY
Are they fed? (after breakfast, snack, or dinner is best)
Do they need to move first?
Is it a reasonable time of day?
Some kids “wake up” just before bedtime and later can work for them. Others like first thing in the morning. Routine is key.
ATTENTION
Praise from you will keep them going.
Ask them about favourite part of the music.
Ask them what they enjoy about playing.
Ask them if they can do a short part all the way through without stopping (slow is fine!)
Encourage them to play for everyone who comes into your house.
Try “I like how you keep trying when it’s tricky.” “I like to hear the loud/soft/high/low part.” “I love hearing your new piece.” “Well done.”
You matter and you are most likely the reason they will persevere. Massive Thanks here to my mom and dad!!! Thank you for your support!
